The Greater Detroit Jazz Society is a organization of passionate and knowledgeable jazz fans who love live jazz! Originally established in 1989 by music lovers Emily Laura and Rickie Knowles, the Windsor Detroit Jazz Club was created to inform people via newsletters where to go to hear the finest jazz musicians performing in the Windsor and Detroit areas.

When Rickie passed away in 1998, her ex-husband Bill immediately took over as the director of the Windsor Detroit Jazz Club until December 2009 when he stepped down due to health complications.
Members and good friends Sally and Bill Bolle, Chuck and Jane Moss and Art Stone took over the club in January. They chose not to have a director because as lifelong friends, felt they could all work together well without having to take directions. The name of the club was changed to the Greater Detroit Jazz Society, LLC., which more accurately reflected the geographic area of the patrons.
The 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month they gather at Shield's of Southfield to listen to the finest musicians of this genre in the Detroit, Toledo and Ann Arbor areas. Every Summer, May - September the GDJS Sponsors A Summer Jazz Series Wednesday nights at the Rec Bowl in Mt. Clemens. Their annual potluck Jazz picnic which is open to non members for a small cover charge in August is also at the Rec Bowl.
