About

The Sun Messengers are a nine-piece, horn-driven R&B band that officially formed in 1980. The Band actually formed during 1978 in Detroit's Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood as the percussion-heavy, Afro-Caribbean flavored "Kuumba", then changed its name, and added more horns, to become the Sun Messengers in 1980.
An estimated 75-100 musicians have traveled through its ranks -- including saxophonist James Carter, organist Lyman Woodard, local blues and jazz impresario RJ Spangler and Sun Ra/Kool & the Gang trumpeter Michael Ray. The Sun Messengers have made their mark around the state and beyond, They served as the house band for the Detroit Pistons from 1996 to 2011 and over the years, opened for Jay Leno and backed up R&B luminaries such as Martha Reeves, The Drifters and Sir Mack Rice (“Mustang Sally”). The Sun Messengers have played an unbelievable variety of venues including the famed Sloppy Joe’s in Key West, Myskins in Charleston, S.C., CBGB’s in New York and a Rockefeller family wedding on Long Island, The Cubby Bear and Fitzgerald’s in Chicago and The Bamboo Club in Toronto, as well as the Detroit Jazz Festival, the Ann Arbor Summer Music Festival, and the Mackinac Island Jazz Festival.
