About

This gifted musician has been playing the keys for over thirty years. It's clearly second nature. From All Star jam sessions to smokey after hours clubs he rarely misses his opportunity to sit down at the keys and lay down a groove that simply fits. In high demand on the jazz, gospel, rhythm & blues, house, funk, techno & Rock scenes his creativity seems almost endless and his association the same magnitude.

Phil has backed international greats such as funk icon George Clinton, (Was not Was) sax man Dave McMurray, trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave, jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan, gospel greats The Ridgeway Sisters & recorded with the great Herbert Pickard. He's backed Pat Lewis of (Issac Hayes' Hot Buttered Soul), funk diva Belita Woods, Detroit phenomenon James Carter, R&B vocalist Bettye Lavette, Motown legend Martha Reeves, a number of respected jazz crooners… Kathy Lamb, Ortheia Barnes, Nikki Pearse, Camille Price, Audrey Northington, Ramona Collins, Joan Crawford, Leslie Ferguson, Nancy Davis and more. When not lending his talents to the ladies of the stage he feels right at home with Detroit's instrumental All Stars such as…Straight Ahead's flutist Althea Renee, international jazz guitarist Perry Hughes progressive jazz bassist Ralphe Armstrong, The Shy and nationally acclaimed trumpeter Rayse Biggs.
Probably best known as for his many years with vocalist Thornetta Davis, a gig which has taken him across many tours of Europe as well as the Midwest. Currently He's in his band The Phillip J. Hale Trio preforming Jazz with Milton Hale on drums and John Barron on bass, and the The Mighty Funhouse, a Jazz/P-Funk band featuring Skeeto Valdez on the drums, Paul Randolph on the Bass and vocals John "JD" Douglas on trumpet and Phil on Keys
