About

The "Back In The Day Band" was formed by Larry Lee who played Professional Football with The Detroit Lions, The Miami Dolphins and Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos. The band is comprised of some of the finest musicians around. They feature former members of The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Spinners, The Dramatics, The Contours, and the The Funk Brothers. The "Back In The Day Band" plays a mix of cover songs and originals that span R&B, Funk, Pop, Soul, Blues, Hip-Hop, Disco, and even Rock.

Larry Lee and the Back in the Day Band have opened for the likes of Isaac Hayes, the O'Jays, Smokey Robinson, George Clinton, the Four Tops, Temptations, Spinners, Boyz II Men, En Vogue and Morris Day and The Time. Over the past several years his band has played numerous NFL events, from the Hall of Fame induction parties of guys like Barry Sanders and Richard Dent to various Super Bowl events from the hot-ticket commissioner's party and the Pittsburgh Steelers' victory celebration after Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa to a post game gathering at Super Bowl XL in Detroit, where he shared the stage with Little Richard.

Larry was a star center for the UCLA Bruins and later spent 18 years in the NFL playing for the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos. He also served as Vice-president of Football Operations for the Lions.

After retiring he decided to return to his childhood passion - music. Since then he has played with groups like The Ohio Players, Heatwave and Zapp. His "Back in the Day Band" has played at local events like The Urban Wheel Awards, Arts, Beats & Eats, the R&B Jazzfest and River Days and has performed at prestigious venues like The SoundBoard Theatre, Hart Plaza, and several national venues.

In 2006 he was named Urban Funk Bass Player of the Year at the Detroit Music Awards.

James Chaney

James Chaney.jpg

Mr. Chaney is the most decorated member of the band. He has played with greats such as Tyrone Davis, Little Milton, John Lee Hooker, New Birth, "The Contours", and "The Funk Brothers". His solos are priceless and he can even belt out some Blues vocally.

James is in his 70s but don't tell him because he might just start acting like it.

Chuck Stone

The "big fella - gentle giant" in the group is laid-back until it's time for him to attack his horn.

Chuck comes from the school of Fred Wesley. He is precise when it comes to his part of the chords as a member of the horn section.

He has been a part of the Dramatics organization for 20+ years. He has also traveled the world as a freelance musician with numerous well-known groups.

Mark Croft

Eric Boyd

Eric is a Detroit fixture who has graced stages and studios all over the state. He comes from the Ohio Players front man, Leroy (Sugarfoot) Bonner school of licks.

During the course of our show you will hear some of the funkiest grooves coming from this man's guitar. And when he's featured as a soloist, his playing goes up another level from there.
