The Formal Nightmare L-R: Juan Garcia, Rico Ortiz, Ram Rivera

The Formal Nightmare is a mixed-genre metal band from Lincoln Park, MI. Formed in 2016, the band consists of three members (Ram, Juan, and Rico). Topics discussed in the songwriting mainly revolve around internal struggles (depression/anxiety), nihilistic views of the world, distaste for politicians, and the mysteries of the universe.

Ram and Juan, being friends since high school, have always dreamed of one day being in a band. And by a stroke of fate, Ram met Rico in a class at college. All three formed the band and had their first show in May of 2016, hosted by their friends, Swell Times and Dude! The Formal Nightmare pulls sounds from many bands that personally influence each member. For Ram, his main influences come from bands such as Kiss, My Chemical Romance and Dance Gavin Dance. For Juan, Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist and Yes. And Rico, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin and Genesis. Plus many other great acts of the past. Discussing many topics such as suicide, depression, global injustice and violence, nothing is off the table. Their goal is to tell their view of the world, but to bring joy while doing it; to embrace the madness in a sense. They believe music is one of the purest forms of expression.
